It is straight forward to work out how much money you can save by switching to a new boiler.

As a rough guide, the efficiency of a boiler that is 10 years old or more will most likely be between 70% and 80%. Boilers that are more than 20 years old might be as little as 60% efficient.

By switching to a new condensing boiler, the efficiency of which will be around 91%, householders stand to save 10-30% on their gas bills.

The average household heating and hot water bill is around £800. Householders could save between £80 and £240 per annum on their fuel bills by switching to an A-rated condensing boiler, more if coupled with a well controlled, weather compensated programmable room stat.

Boiler Installation

Boilers older than 10 years old are inefficient, wasting energy and money. This has an environmental impact and an also an impact on your pocket! Many older boilers only convert 60% of the gas they use into heat, wasting a massive 40% of fuel.

All new boilers installed are condensing boilers that convert a minimum of 90% of the gas used into heat. This meets the current building regulation standards and helps to reduce your environmental impact. A new condensing boiler can save you an additional 30% on your annual heating bills. This is a considerable saving over the lifetime of a boiler.

There are various types of condensing boilers available which can be tailored to your individual needs.

Worcester have absolutely no influence on Which? directly which is why it is so heartening to see the success they have achieved with Which? since the boilers have been included in the study.

Which Best Buys are awarded to products that have either tested or surveyed and been proven to be the best products in that particular category. In the case of boilers, the Best Buys are awarded based on customer feedback and in the gas boiler survey we have won which best buys every year since 2010.

New boiler / Boiler guide

Thinking about a new boiler? Should you retain your existing set up or install a new system? There are three main types of heating and hot water system set up. We give some straight forward explanations below with pros and cons of each. To find out how much it will cost to replace one of these boilers, use our online quote calculator.

What is a combi boiler?

A combination boiler (or "combi") is a compact, single unit that generates all the heating and hot water needed for the household.

A combination boiler heats water directly from the cold mains instantaneously. This is different from traditional systems which stores hot water in a tank in advance of use.

A combination boiler does not need a hot water cylinder or tanks in the loft. Everything is done through a single, usually wall-hung, unit. The sizing of combi boilers is different to that of a regular boiler the Kilowatt rating is based on the hot water volume that can be generated e.g. A 25 KW combi is suited for a single bathroom house right up to a 42kw which will supply a lot more bathrooms.

What is a regular boiler?

A regular boiler (sometimes referred to a traditional, conventional or heat-only boiler) works with a hot water cylinder. These usually have an expansion tank and cold water storage tank in the loft.

There are many benefits to retaining such a system. The cost of replacing the boiler is low. Hot water cylinders also provide good flow rates, which is perfect for households where a lot of hot water is used simultaneously.

What is a system boiler?

Like regular boilers, system boilers work with a hot water cylinder. Unlike regular boilers, there are no tanks in the loft, and all of the components that would normally be outside a regular boiler (pumps, valves etc) are integrated into the boiler.

These are a modern version of the Regular boiler and are often installed along side unvented hot water cylinders. They are good for properties that have a high hot water demand however good hot water flow rates depends upon good incoming mains water pressure.
